Whenever possible, I try to use fresh, organic fruit in place of a refined sweetener. Here are a few examples of my morning meals with fruit:
1. Slice a stone fruit like peaches and arrange on top of pancakes. Skip the maple syrup.
2. Add blueberries and a banana to a low sugar content cereal with unsweetened milk.
3. Make a green juice or smoothie and add a piece of fruit if you want it a bit sweet.
As I gradually decrease the amount of sugar I consume with each meal, along with the type of sugar I use, my taste buds adjust accordingly, and I no longer enjoy foods heavily sweetened with artificial sugars. Plus, my teeth are thankful as well! Speaking of artificial sugars, here’s what I try to avoid:
1. Splenda
2. Sweet-n-low
3. white refined sugar
Sometimes I have to use another source of sugar because fruit won’t be ideal in certain situations. For those who drink sweetened coffee, try using agave or stevia which are plant-based sugars.
On a side note, there are so many controversies regarding which sugars are best and which ones to avoid. Do the research first, test them out, and then decide for yourself what works for you. If you have the money or you have great medical coverage, visit a Naturopathic Doctor to hear what the experts have to say about your specific body constitution. Still do the research yourself so that you can ask questions based on what you’ve learned on your own. Your dialogue with a professional will be richer and more informative.
